For Jonathan Roozeman, music has never been separate from everyday life. Growing up in a family of musicians, Jonathan developed an early and lasting connection with the cello. His relationship with the instrument remains one of discovery, shaped by a continuing search for an individual voice and a deeper connection to the music itself. Inspired by the great interpretive artists of the past, Jonathan values interpretations that feel honest, direct, and personal.

As both a soloist and chamber musician, Jonathan has built an international career spanning leading venues and festivals across Europe, North America, and Asia, including the Berlin Konzerthaus, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and Lincoln Center in New York. The New York Times wrote that Jonathan “proved a virtuoso himself.” He has collaborated with conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Christoph Eschenbach, Sakari Oramo, Osmo Vänskä, Dima Slobodeniouk, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Santtu-Matias Rouvali, and has performed with orchestras such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic, and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, Jonathan became the youngest prizewinner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

Guided by a spirit of exploration, Jonathan is drawn to both established and emerging voices, approaching each project as an opportunity to uncover new perspectives and deepen his connection to the music. Recent projects include interdisciplinary collaborations with choreographers Saburo Teshigawara and Rihoko Sato. Jonathan’s recording of Kalevi Aho’s Cello Concerto No. 2 received a five-star review from BBC Music Magazine. In August 2026, he released Kaiku (Echo), a new album on BIS Records featuring contemporary Finnish music, including several works commissioned specifically for the project.

Committed to artistic growth, Jonathan seeks opportunities for collaboration, exploration, and exchange across the international music community. His artistic development has been shaped by studies with Frans Helmerson at Kronberg Academy and, more recently, with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.
