Kuan-Wei Chen

Piano

Based in Vienna, Taiwanese pianist Kuan-Wei Chen is particularly interested in music that explores tension, darkness, sincerity, and psychological depth. He is especially interested in works that reflect genuine human experiences and emotions with sincerity and honesty.

He feels particularly close to the music of Ravel, Prokofiev, Janáček, Scriabin, and other twentieth-century composers. At the same time, his interests extend beyond individual works. He is especially interested in concert programming and in the connections that emerge when different pieces are placed alongside one another. For him, a recital is not simply a collection of works, but a carefully shaped journey and an opportunity to create a deeper connection with the audience.

His artistic process is shaped by listening, reflection, and experimentation. Through the study of scores, recordings, and live performances, he continually reexamines his own ideas and musical choices in search of greater authenticity, clarity, and understanding.

A finalist of the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition and prizewinner of the Maria Canals International Piano Competition, Kuan-Wei has also been recognized at competitions including Les Étoiles du Piano. He has appeared as a soloist and recitalist throughout Europe and Asia while continuing to develop his artistic profile in Vienna.

In recent years, he has become increasingly interested in how music relates to people and society today. Beyond pursuing excellence in performance and interpretation, he continues to reflect on how music can help people better understand themselves and others, and how it can create meaningful connections in a rapidly changing world.

For Kuan-Wei, music is not only a way of preserving tradition, but also a way of asking questions, sharing experiences, and finding meaning in an ever-changing world.
