Leonid Kerbel, an internationally recognized violinist, concertmaster, and dedicated pedagogue, has devoted his life to solo and chamber performance, artistic collaboration, education, and the mentorship of exceptionally talented young musicians.

Born in 1962 in Kharkov, Ukraine, Leonid Kerbel began his violin studies at the age of four. At six, he was admitted to the Central Music School in Moscow, where he studied under Professor Yankilevich.

He continued his musical education in Israel at the Tel Aviv University Rubin Academy of Music with Professor Yair Kless and pursued advanced studies in Belgium and Germany with Professor Philip Hirshhorn and Professor Rosa Fain. He further refined his artistry through masterclasses with distinguished musicians such as Joseph Gingold, Isaac Stern, Nathan Milstein, János Starker, William Pleeth, and renowned chamber ensembles including the Beaux-Arts Trio and the Borodin Trio.

His pedagogical journey began at the age of seventeen, reflecting an early recognition of his exceptional teaching abilities. The remarkable achievements of his students—many of them prizewinners and finalists in major international competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth, Bach, Wieniawski and Lipinski Competitions—stand as a testament to his deep commitment to pedagogy and to nurturing young artists.

Leonid Kerbel has developed a rich and extensive career as a chamber musician, performing in formations ranging from duo to nonet. He has been a leading member of several ensembles, including the Gertler Quartet, Horta Quartet, Contrast Quartet, Arpeggione Trio, and Nuove Musiche String Quartet and Chamber Orchestra.

He has also served as concertmaster of the Herzliya Chamber Orchestra, the Nuove Musiche Chamber Orchestra, and the New Belgian Chamber Orchestra, further reflecting his versatility and leadership as an orchestral musician.

In 2005, he founded the Trio Sonnetto, collaborating with Belgian pianist Eliane Reyes and Belarusian cellist Aleksandr Khramouchin. The trio benefited from the support and mentorship of the distinguished pianist Paul Badura-Skoda.

A prizewinner of both solo and chamber music competitions at the Rubin Academy, as well as the Clairmont Competition, Leonid Kerbel has performed extensively throughout Europe, Israel, and the United States as a soloist, chamber musician, and concertmaster. He has appeared at numerous festivals, including Festival de Minimes, Festival de l’Été Mosan, Festival de Mozart, and Festival van Vlaanderen, and has recorded for Israeli Radio, BRTN, RTBF, and National Public Radio (USA).

For 17 years, he was a permanent faculty member of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in the United States. He has also been invited to give masterclasses at leading institutions, including the Royal College of Music in London, where he has been a member of the violin faculty since 2014.

In 1998, together with his wife, Hagit Hassid Kerbel, he founded the Musica Mundi Chamber Music Course and Festival, which has since gained international recognition. In 2019, they further expanded their vision by founding the Musica Mundi School, a unique institution dedicated to the education and development of exceptionally talented young musicians.

In recent years, Leonid Kerbel has been invited to give masterclasses at the JMC – Jerusalem Music Center and to join the Althafen Foundation Talent Studio as an expert and mentor, further extending his engagement with the next generation of outstanding young artists.

From 2011 to 2015, Leonid Kerbel served as Professor of Violin at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. In 2011, he was also appointed the official representative in Belgium of the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition and has served as a member of its jury.
