Moldovan accordionist Radu Rățoi is widely recognized as one of the leading accordionists of his generation. Winner of the 2024 Young Concert Artists “Susan Wadsworth” International Auditions in New York and recipient of Denmark’s prestigious Léonie Sonning Talent Prize, he has earned more than sixty national and international awards throughout his career, a distinction that reflects both the breadth of his accomplishments and the exceptional versatility of his musicianship. In recognition of his artistic achievements, he was also awarded the title of Master in Arts by the President of Moldova.

Since 2024, Rățoi has served as soloist of the National Chamber Orchestra of Moldova and has appeared with orchestras including the SWR Symphonieorchester, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Edmonton Symphony. He has performed at major venues including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Kennedy Center, the Radio Concert House in Copenhagen, and the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. His performances as a soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist have brought international attention to an instrument that remains underrepresented on the classical concert stage.

A passionate chamber musician, Rățoi collaborates with leading instrumentalists in ensembles featuring flute, violin, and cello. Through these collaborations, he explores the accordion’s ability to integrate naturally into established classical repertoire, bringing new textures, acoustic balance, and fresh sonic possibilities to works from different periods.

At the center of Rățoi’s artistic vision is a commitment to expanding the role of the accordion within classical music. Through performances, new repertoire, and his own catalogue of more than 100 arrangements and transcriptions of works by composers such as Bach, Scarlatti, Rameau, and Liszt, he seeks to demonstrate the instrument’s expressive depth, technical sophistication, and symphonic potential. His recordings, including Greatest Organ Works for Accordion and 12 Transcendental Études, reflect this ongoing artistic mission.

Rățoi began his musical journey at the age of six. At 18, he won three of the world’s major accordion competitions, the Coupe Mondiale, the Trophée Mondial, and the Castelfidardo competition, in both the Classical Music and Virtuoso categories, becoming the first musician to hold both titles concurrently.
