Simone Young is an internationally respected conductor whose career spans major opera houses, symphony orchestras, and influential artistic leadership roles. Born in Sydney, she began her professional journey in Germany, establishing a strong presence in both operatic and symphonic repertoires and appearing with many of the world’s leading ensembles.

Since 2022, Young has served as Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, marking a significant return to her home city. Recent seasons have included important productions at the Opéra de Paris, Vienna State Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera, along with concert engagements with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Orchestre national de France, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Her previous appointments include Artistic Director of the Hamburg State Opera and Chief Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic (2005–2015), a tenure distinguished by world premieres, broad repertory exploration, and a strong commitment to contemporary music. She has also held roles such as Principal Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic, Artistic Director of Opera Australia, and Principal Guest Conductor with major European orchestras and festivals.

Young is widely known for her work in the music of Wagner and Strauss, having conducted complete Ring cycles in Vienna and Berlin and led acclaimed performances of Elektra, Salome, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. At the Vienna State Opera—where she has been a regular presence since her 1993 debut—she has conducted landmark revivals, rediscoveries, and core works of the German and Italian repertoire.

In the concert hall, she has collaborated with many of the world’s prominent orchestras, including the Berlin, Vienna, London, Munich, and New York Philharmonics. Her extensive discography includes major recordings from Hamburg, such as Wagner’s Ring cycle, Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, and complete symphony cycles of Bruckner and Brahms.

Among her honors are the Brahms Prize, the Goethe Medal, honorary doctorates from the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne, and distinctions including Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres and Member of the Order of Australia. As an Honorary Board Member of the Althafen Foundation, Simone Young contributes her experience in operatic leadership, symphonic interpretation, and artistic mentorship.
