Vasily Petrenko is Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied conducting at the St Petersburg Conservatory, where he trained under distinguished teachers including Ilya Musin, whose pedagogical lineage has shaped generations of conductors.
He has collaborated with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and the Cleveland Orchestra, and appears regularly at major international festivals. From 2013 to 2020, he served as Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic, playing a central role in further elevating its international presence.
His extensive and widely acclaimed discography spans a broad repertoire and is closely associated with labels such as Naxos and Onyx Classics. His recordings have received numerous international awards, reflecting both artistic depth and interpretative clarity across a wide stylistic range.
Alongside his performing career, he is committed to education and the development of emerging musicians. He has worked with young artists through academies and masterclasses, sharing insight into the craft of conducting and the long-term shaping of an artistic voice within today’s evolving musical landscape.
